Undercoat paint is the bit that traditionally would go between the wood or metal primer prior to the top coat gloss or eggshell finish being applied. Not so commonly used these days as most people would double primer if necessary. Once again though similar to primer, undercoat paint is of a higher solid content than the finish coat so it can fill some minor
imperfections and grain detail so that once the final finish coat is applied you will have a smoother finish.
