Watertite contains biocides to protect the dried coating against fungal attack for a minimum of 5 years after application, this makes it an ideal choice for areas and surfaces where fungal degradation can be problematic.

Damp or wet surfaces are not a problem for Watertite as it can be applied directly onto them curing problems immediately, you can recoat in just 4 hours drying to a bright white, smooth and non yellowing finish.

Zinsser Watertite adheres to any interior or exterior surface, the formulation will also prevent recurring efflorescence on concrete or brickwork.

Preparation

New or unpainted masonry

  • Surface must be clean and free of dirt, grease, oil, soap and other contaminants.
  • New masonry must cure at least 30 days before applying Watertite.
  • Salting or efflorescence – a white powdery deposit often found on walls – must be removed (?etched?) with a solution of hydrochloric acid or concrete etching compound. Follow manufacturer?s directions and safety precautions.
  • Rinse the surface thoroughly with water after application.
  • Remove all existing mould and mildew. Use a proper fungicidal wash following manufacturer?s directions.
  • For commercial buildings, follow appropriate guidelines for mould removal.

Previously painted surfaces:

  • Watertite is designed to produce a waterproof finish when applied to bare masonry.
  • It can be used over previously painted surfaces, however its waterproofing ability is then dependent upon the integrity of the previous coating.
  • For best results, remove as much of the old coating as possible by manually scraping the surface, followed by thorough wire brushing. A belt power sander with a 50 grit sanding belt is also effective.
  • Avoid the inhalation of dust.
  • Wear a suitable face mask if dry sanding.
  • Exterior surfaces should be power washed or sand blasted to remove all loose and scaling paint and cement.
  • Clean all surfaces with an efflorescence remover or brick cleaner and rinse as detailed above.
  • Loose sand and grit must be removed from the surface by vacuuming or sweeping.

Patching Water Leaks and Cracks:

  • All holes and cracks, especially active water leaks, must be patched with hydraulic cement.
  • Seal the joint where the floor and wall meet with hydraulic cement (e.g. Portland Cement) or a flexible urethane sealant.
  • Follow manufacturer?s directions for dry time, etc.
